About Matt
Matt Fuentes is a Partner at Avenue Solutions, joining the firm after more than 15 years working on Capitol Hill, in health policy and in Democratic politics.
Matt most recently spent eight years working for Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, where he spearheaded and oversaw the Leader’s health policy portfolio. In this role, Matt was responsible for managing and leading the Senate Democratic caucus on health policy issues, as well as negotiating a series of bipartisan agreements.
He fought to protect and expand the Affordable Care Act, including defending against its repeal in 2017 and securing its expansion in 2021. He negotiated and led caucus efforts on six Covid relief bills, including the creation of the Provider Relief Fund, funding for vaccine procurement, support for therapeutic development, the requirement and funding for free testing, resources for public health and more. He was a key player in drafting and securing the support of all 50 Senate Democrats in 2022 for the prescription drug pricing reform provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act. He also negotiated numerous bipartisan health packages that passed into law, including support for hospitals, physicians and health clinics, telehealth expansion, improvements to the country’s mental health system, Medicaid improvements, surprise billing reform, health tax relief and more.
Prior to joining Leader Schumer’s team, Matt was a Health Policy Analyst on the Senate Finance Committee, and a Clinical Learning and Communications Specialist at the Alliance of Community Health Plans. He began his Washington career working at national campaign organizations, working as a researcher for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the House Majority PAC.
Matt has a Master of Public Health degree from George Washington University and his bachelor’s degree from Trinity College. He lives in Virginia with his wife Amy and their two sons, Benjamin and William.
